PIT STOP: 'An American Salute' Kicks Off

• The NASCAR K&N Pro Series West will return to action at Kern County Raceway Park in Bakersfield, Calif. The Armed Forces 150 will mark the second event at the half-mile oval, which opened last year. Greg Pursley won the inaugural Kern race, and enters this week with the series points lead by 12 tallies over David Mayhew.

• The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will contest the second of four events at Stafford (Conn.) Motor Speedway this season, and the first of two under the lights. The tour will headline Stafford’s Friday night racing card with the TSI Harley-Davidson 125. Defending tour champion and NASCAR Next driver Ryan Preece also is the defending 125 victor.

• The NASCAR Mexico Toyota Series is set for its sixth date on the 2014 schedule with the Queretana 200 in Querétaro, Mexico. Rafael Martinez won the event a year ago while NASCAR Next driver Daniel Suarez was on the pole. Suarez has a seven-point lead in the season standings entering this week.

Memorial Day Weekend Specials: A number of NASCAR Whelen All-American Series tracks are honoring veterans and active duty military with discounts and special events during Memorial Day weekend. Among them:

May 24:

Airborne Park Speedway, Plattsburgh, N.Y. The .4-mile paved oval hosts Military Appreciation Night. Active duty and veterans with ID receive a $4.00 general admission discount. On track action includes sport modifieds, renegades and mini stocks.

Caraway Speedway, Sophia, N.C.  Officials at the .455-mile paved oval are offering $5.00 general admission to members of the military with ID. The race night is headlined by twin-25s for late model trucks. Other divisions in action included legends, wildcats, u-cars, and hornets.

Kern County Raceway Park, a half-mile paved oval in Bakersfield, Calif., hosts the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West in the Armed Forces 150 on Saturday. NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions in action include the track’s Citgo Lubricants late models in a 50-lap feature. Spec mods round out the event. Military personnel with ID receive general admission of $15.00, a 50 percent discount. About 75 Army cadets will carry a massive American flag during opening ceremonies. Minter Field Air Museum will provide a parade of military equipment. Fireworks conclude the show.

Magic Valley Speedway, a third-mile paved oval in Twin Falls, Idaho, offers free admission to military personnel with ID on a weekly basis. NASCAR Whelen All-American Series super stocks, street stocks and hornets will be topped by a 75-lap pro four division feature.

South Boston (Va.) Speedway, a .4-mile paved oval, hosts Military Night Saturday with free admission for all military personnel with ID. Two 75-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late model races headline the show. Limited sportsman, pure stocks and champ karts round out the event.

Southern National Motorsports Park, a .4-mile paved oval in Lucama, N.C., hosts the Memorial Day 290 Saturday. All veterans and active military receive free general admission. The 290 laps of feature racing includes NASCAR Whelen All-American Series late models in a 100-lap main event. Other divisions: limited late models, chargers, street stocks, u-cars, legends, bandoleros.

May 24-25:

Colorado National Speedway, a .375-mile paved oval in Dacono, Colo., opens a two-day holiday weekend Saturday with the All-State Sweeping “Honoring The Veterans” Night. The evening is headlined by military personnel racing in a seven-lap battle of the military branches. They will drive mini-stock style race cars. The winner receives a trophy. NASCAR divisions in competition include late models in a 75-lap feature. Other divisions: pro trucks, grand American modifieds, and demo X.

On Sunday, super late models compete in a 100-lap main event. Joining them are pure stocks and legends. The evening concludes with fireworks. On both days, military personnel receive a $4.00 general admission discount with ID.

May 23:

Spencer Speedway, a half-mile paved oval in Williamson, N.Y., operates on Fridays and modifieds are NASCAR Division I. Other divisions: super six, four cylinder.

May 24:

Autodrome St. Eustache, a .4-mile paved oval in near Montreal in Quebec, Canada, operates on Saturdays and sportsmen are NASCAR Division I. Other divisions: sports compact, mini legends.

Beech Ridge Motor Speedway, a third-mile paved oval in Scarborough, Maine, operates on Saturdays and the pro series division is NASCAR Division I. Other divisions: sport series, wildcat.

Holland (N.Y.) Motorsports Complex, a .375-mile banked paved oval opens for its 55th season. It operates on Saturdays and pro modifieds (an SK-style modified) is NASCAR Division I. Other divisions include Charger, Hornet and Figure 8.

Lake Erie Speedway, a .375-mile paved oval in North East, Pa., operates on Saturdays and modifieds are NASCAR Division I. Other divisions: street stocks, compacts.
