PIT BOX: Champion In Waiting

Lapcevich Primed To Make History Saturday At Kawartha
By Jason Christley, NASCAR
September 12, 2016 - 3:12pm

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

• Three wins, eight top fives and 11 top 10s and it all comes down to this: 16-year-old Cayden Lapcevich just has to fire his engine to start Saturday's Kawartha 250 at Kawartha Speedway in Fraserville, Ontario, to become the youngest champion in NASCAR history. Lapcevich collected win No. 3 at Autodrome St-Eustache this past Saturday to open a 41-point cushion on two-time champion Andrew Ranger in the NASCAR Pinty's Series championship. But don't expect the second-generation driver to coast. He's been dominant on ovals this season, with three wins, two seconds and a third in the six previous starts. Lapcevich would break the series' record set by Ranger in 2007 as the youngest Canadian champion, and eclipse Daytona 500 winner Joey Logano as the youngest champion in NASCAR's touring or national series.

• Kyle Benjamin did what he needed to do at South Carolina's Greenville Pickens Speedway. The NASCAR Next alum won two weeks ago to remain 27 points behind NASCAR K&N Pro Series East points leader Justin Haley. The series makes its third road-course appearance of the season with the inaugural event at New Jersey Motorsports Park Saturday in the JUSTDRIVE.com 125. Haley has been pretty good on road courses, finishing second to Austin Cindric at VIRginia International Raceway in June and at Watkins Glen International in August. Benjamin hasn't been bad, finishing fourth and sixth.

• The NASCAR Whelen Euro Series returns to action this weekend with the semifinal round of the 2016 championship at Adria Raceway in Italy. The 2.702 km (1.679-mile), 17-turn course will host the series for the first time. Frédéric Gabillon holds a one-point lead on 2014 champion Anthony Kumpen, as each have won three races this season. Borja Garcia is 24 points back and NASCAR Next driver Alon Day is 32 points behind. With points counting double for each of the semifinal and final races, a slip up by any of the leaders can open the door for the race for the 2016 title.

• Burt Myers brought home another top five finish and moved a race closer to his second NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour crown. Myers holds a 14-point lead over Andy Seuss with three races remaining, as the tour heads to Virginia's South Boston Speedway Saturday. Bobby Measmer Jr. picked up his first career win and moved into third in points, 30 back of Myers. When the tour visited the historic .4-mile oval in June, four-time champion George Brunnhoelzl III edged Myers for the victory.
