PIT BOX: Lia Look To Return To Victory Lane

Whelen Modifieds Head Back To New London-Waterford

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

• Defending NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby carries a one-point lead over Timmy Solomito heading into Saturday's New England Cycle Center 161 at the tight .375-mile oval of New London-Waterford Speedbowl. Coby won at the Speedbowl in 2012 and was runner-up in 2013 and 2015. But the driver to beat may just be last year's Coors Light Pole winner Donny Lia has a pair of victories at the track and seven top fives in 11 starts. His average finish of 8.9 is the highest among active drivers with more than five starts at the track. Like Lia, Solomito and third-place Justin Bonsignore have plenty of experience getting around the quarter-mile Riverhead Raceway on Long Island and hope to use that knowledge to their advantage. And tour veteran Jamie Tomaino is set to make his 600th career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour start. The New Jersey veteran will become the first non-NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver to reach that milestone with one national or regional touring series.

• Alon Day looks to continue his hot streak as the second round of the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series commences at Venray Speedway in Netherlands, near the border of Germany. Day split the opening weekend at Valencia with points leader Anthony Kumpen, and the 25-year-old from Isreal has won four of the last six series races dating back to last year. Nicolò Rocca and Kumpen each won rounds last year at Venray, a .55-mile high-banked oval.
