LOUDON, N.H. -- Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series driver Ryan Newman scored his sixth career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour pole on Friday at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Behind the wheel of the No. 77 Menards/Curb Records Chevrolet, Newman posted a time of 28.952 seconds (131.556 mph) around the 1.058-mile oval.
All six of Newman's career poles in the series have come at the 'Magic Mile' and he has already visited Victory Lane there twice. He will look for a third win there Saturday, before competing in the NASCAR Playoffs on Sunday.
Behind Newman, Rowan Pennink qualified second in his No. 3 Cape Cod Cooper/JDL Environmental Chevrolet for Boelher Racing. Pennink posted a quick time of 29.047 seconds (131.125 mph) as he seeks his first career New Hampshire victory. He will take the green from the outside of the front row.
Former Whelen Modified Tour champion Donny Lia makes his return to the Tour this weekend and posted a third fastest time with a lap of 29.113 seconds (130.828 mph) while driving for Tom Baldwin in the No. 7 Bardahl Chevrolet. Behind him, Timmy Solomito, who enters the race third in points, was fourth. Bristol winner Patrick Emerling rounded out the top five.
Six through 10 in the session went to Andy Seuss, Ron Silk, Doug Coby, David Sapienza and Brendon Bock.
The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour returns to the track on Saturday, with the running of the F.W. Webb 100 at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. The event will be the 14th of 16 on the 2017 championship points schedule.
