PIT BOX: Pinty's Title Road Runs Thru CTMP

Labor Day Weekend Includes Oswego, East Carolina & Greenville
By Jason Christley, NASCAR
August 29, 2016 - 1:08pm

WHAT TO WATCH FOR

• With three races remaining in the NASCAR Pinty's Series season, this weekend represents the best chance for two-time champion Andrew Ranger to reclaim the top spot from rookie Cayden Lapcevich. The 16-year-old enters Sunday's Can-Am 200 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario, holding a 12-point lead after picking up the win last weekend in Nova Scotia. But Ranger opened the season with a win on the 2.459-mile, 11-turn road course and has three victories in 11 starts there. Lapcevich finished fourth after starting 11th at CTMP in the opener and will look to minimize Ranger's road-course advantage before the series wraps up on a pair of ovals. Jason Hathaway is the defending race winner, while Alex Labbe won the pole there earlier this year.

• Justin Bonsignore bounced back from a rough result at Bristol Motor Speedway to claim the victory at New York's Riverhead Raceway this past Saturday and close the gap on NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship leader Doug Coby. Now they take the fight to upstate New York, as the tour runs the Toyota Mod Classic 150 presented by McDonald's at Oswego Speedway Saturday night. This will mark the tour's first stop at the .625-mile oval since 1989. The track held three races in 1988 and four in 1989, with Tony Hirschman winning three times and Brian Ross twice. Mike McLaughlin won there in 1988 en route to the championship, and Mike Stefanik did the same 1989 during his title run.

• Burt Myers carries a 10-point championship lead to East Carolina Speedway in Robersonville, North Carolina, as the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour makes its inaugural visit to the .375-mile oval. Two-time tour champion Andy Suess and four-time champion George Brunnhoelzl III continue to chase Myers, who has picked up three wins this season. Myers is chasing his second title and the visit to the tri-oval marks a run of four races in the next six weeks that will decide the 2016 champion.

• Justin Haley leads the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East back to South Carolina's Greenville Pickens Speedway, where his 2016 championship campaign kicked into gear in March. The 16-year-old from Winamac, Indiana, scored his first career K&N Pro East win in that race and returns six months later to the flat half-mile with a commanding 36-point lead over Kyle Benjamin with three races remaining. Haley is looking to give HScott Motorsports with Justin Marks its fourth straight East champion. No driver has swept the races since Greenville began hosting two in 2011, but HScott drivers have won four of the last five races there.
