PIT BOX: Two For The Money At Utah

K&N Pro West Doubleheader Headlines Busy Race Weekend

• The back-and-forth between Todd Gilliland and Ryan Partridge heads to Salt Lake City as the NASCAR K&N Pro Series West embarks on a unique doubleheader weekend. The two drivers have held the top two spots for all but one race -- when Partdridge briefly dropped to third -- and have accounted for seven wins in 10 races this season. They'll face a big test with back-to-back 110-mile races on the 3.048-mile road course. Both events will feature full championship purses, including $10,000 to win each, and full championship points. Borrowing a page from the NASCAR Whelen Euro Series, the starting lineup for Sunday's race will be set by a driver's fastest lap in Saturday's race. All this adds up to a double opportunity for drivers to make big gains in the championship race. Gilliland, 16, from Sherrills Ford, North Carolina, originally lost the points lead when he was caught up in a Lap 1 wreck on the road course at Sonoma Speedway. He bounced back to win four straight before Partridge picked up the victory at Oregon's Douglas County Speedway. The 26-year-old from Rancho Cucamonga, California, led the standings following a pair of races. Should the pair falter, defending champion Chris Eggleston is 19 points out in third and leads a pack of five drivers within 21 points of his position.

• Not only was Cayden Lapcevich able to avoid losing ground to road-course ace Andrew Ranger at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park last weekend, the teenage took a huge toward winning the NASCAR Pinty's Series championship. With a third-place run, combined with Ranger's mechanical misfortune, Lapcevich has opened up a 30-point lead with two races remaining in the season. Ranger has a pretty good record at Autodrome St-Eustache heading into this weekend's Lucas Oil 250 with a win, three top fives and six top 10s in six starts at the .4-mile oval in Quebec. The Roxton Pond, Quebec, driver won last year's event in a green-white-checkered finish.

• The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour makes its return to Seekonk Speedway in Massachusetts, and that suits the championship leaders just fine. Three-time champion and points leader Doug Coby made his first trip to New York's Oswego Speedway pay off with a victory, and he's hoping to prove a quick study again to the semi-banked third-mile for the 150. Coby was a non-NASCAR race there in July, and pushed his lead back to 20 points with his Oswego victory. Bonsignore (two wins) and Solomito (three wins) will look to keep pace, while the new venue opens the door for a new winner.

• Rain postponed the Visit Martin County 150 at East Carolina Speedway a week, setting up a stretch of three races in three weekends before the season culminates in October on the quarter-mile at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Burt Myers holds a 10-point lead over two-time champion Andy Seuss as he looks for his eason NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour title. Myers has won a tour-high three races, while four-time champion George Brunnhoelzl has won twice and will look for win No. 3 to get back into the championship picture.
