Best of 2016: Whelen Modified Tour

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Looking back at the 2016 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour season was one of change. New faces visited Victory Lane and challenged for championship. The season ended with the big news that the Whelen Modified Tour and Whelen Southern Modified Tour would unify for 2017, and the schedule for the upcoming season will open in South Carolina and conclude in Connecticut.

CHAMPION'S PROFILE: Myers Doubles Up

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – After six years away from championship glory on the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour, Burt Myers returned to the top of the class in 2016.

In a season filled with accolades for the 40-year-old Walnut Cove, N.C. driver, Myers captured three wins, nine top-fives and 11 top-10 finishes. He also scored two Coors Light Pole Awards over the course of the season, adding to his total (30) as the all-time pole award winner in the history of the Whelen Southern Modified Tour.

CHAMPION'S PROFILE: Coby Builds Legacy

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Doug Coby continues to etch his name into the record books.

The 37-year-old Milford, Conn. driver took down a third straight championship on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour in 2016. 

Driving for Mike Smeriglio Racing, Coby became the first driver in the modern era to take down three straight series titles.

Coby Marches To Fourth Championship

THOMPSON, Conn. -- It took 10 seasons, bouncing between full and part-time rides, for Doug Coby to get his second career NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour victory.

Since then, though, the Milford, Connecticut, driver has compiled a resume that puts him among the elite Modified drivers of all-time.

Swanson Collects Sunoco Rookie Award

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Matt Swanson is unique among his high school peers.

While the other student-athletes at his school participate in a multitude of sports, Swanson is the only one who is a full-time race car driver. And Swanson has excelled in his first season on the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour. So much so that he's clinched the tour's Sunoco Rookie of the Year honors with a race remaining.

Coby Continues Stafford Roll

STAFFORD, Conn. (Oct. 9, 2016) – Doug Coby is the modern day dominator of Stafford Motor Speedway. Nothing that happened Sunday changed that fact.

Despite a delay of a week, and nearly seven more hours during a rain-drenched Sunday, Coby still reigns supreme with a victory in the NAPA Fall Final 150.

Coby rolled to his 10th career victory at the historic half-mile – now trailing only Ted Christopher’s 12 – and extended his lead in the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship standings to 20 points with one race to go.
