Whelen Modified News & Notes: Loudon

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- There are 13 races complete and three left to go in the 2017 NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship points chase. Heading for the 'Magic Mile' of New Hampshire Motor Speedway, the top three drivers in the standings are separated by just nine points. And there promises to be a new championship leader when the weekend is done.

Solomito Scores Crucial Win at Riverhead

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. - Timmy Solomito needed a win to keep pace in the frantic NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship race. He got it at his home track.

The 25-year-old from Islip, New York, powered by Doug Coby with four laps left to take the Miller Lite 200 checkered flag Saturday night at Riverhead Raceway.

Champion Christopher Passes Away

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- NASCAR champion Ted Christopher passed away Saturday after being involved in a plane crash in Connecticut. He was 59.

Christopher is one of two drivers to win the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series national title and a touring series championship. The Plainville, Connecticut, driver won the short-track national title in 2001 and the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour crown in 2008. He was the winningest driver at a pair of Connecticut's historic tracks: Stafford Motor Speedway and Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park.

QUALIFYING: Solomito Right at Home

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. - Timmy Solomito kept his Riverhead Raceway roll going Saturday evening in qualifying for the Miller Lite 200.

Solomito piloted his No. 16 Starrett Racing Ford to a fast lap of 12.017 seconds around the Long Island quarter-mile for his sixth career Coors Light Pole Award. It marked his third at Riverhead, his home track.

Rookie Kyle Soper - who paced afternoon practice - laid down a lap of 12.154 and will start alongside Solomito in the front row for tonight's tussle, slated to go green at 8 p.m.

PRACTICE: Soper Stout at Riverhead

RIVERHEAD, N.Y. - Local hotshoe Kyle Soper led the way in NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour practice Saturday afternoon at Riverhead Raceway in advance of the Miller Lite 200.

Soper's No. 15 Eastport Feeds Chevrolet posted a fast lap of 12.049 seconds in the opening minutes of the one hour session and held on to pace the 24-car field.

Another Riverhead regular and part-time Whelen Modified Tour competitor Kyle Ellwood finished second on the speed chart at 12.061 while defending race winner Timmy Solomito was third at 12.066.

Preece Keeps Up His Winning Ways

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- A spectacular summer for Ryan Preece continued Saturday night at Oswego Speedway in the Toyota Mod Classic 150 presented by McDonald’s. 

The Berlin, Connecticut, native took his fifth checkered flag of the season. Preece took the lead from Matt Hirschman on Lap 114 and never looked back. 

“We came in and made a little bit of an adjustment because I felt he [Hirschman] was better in the first half,” said Preece of the halftime stop. "We were good. Just kind of tried to make him go hard the whole time.”

QUALIFYING: Hirschman Scores Pole

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- For the second consecutive week, and the fifth time in his career, Matt Hirschman scored the Coors Light Pole award on Saturday at the Oswego Speedway.

Driving the No. 60 Pee Dee Motorsports Chevrolet, Hirschman lapped the .625 mile oval with a fast time of 17.640 seconds. He will start up front in the Toyota Mod Classic 150 presented by McDonald’s later on Saturday evening. 

Patrick Emerling, who ran fifth overall in practice, qualified second with a time of 17.662 seconds. He will start alongside Hirschman.

PRACTICE: Coby Rolls At Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y. -- As the fierce battle for the championship nears its end, the top two drivers in the points standings each showed their strength in Saturday’s practice for the Toyota Mod Classic 150 presented by McDonald’s at Oswego Speedway. 

Fresh off his victory at Seekonk, Doug Coby posted the fastest overall time in the two practice sessions with a time of 17.592 (127.899). Point leader Ryan Preece was quickest in the first practice session, and third fastest overall, posting a time of 17.699 (127.126) around the .625 mile oval.
