DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Four-time Whelen Modified Tour champion Doug Coby posted the fastest overall time in practice Friday at Stafford Motor Speedway. The two sessions were in preparation for the Stafford 150. The driver of the Mayhew Tools No. 2 posted a quick time of 18.383 seconds in the final practice round, besting all of his challengers by more than a tenth. Coby will seek his seventh straight Coors Light Pole award at Stafford in group qualifying on Friday night and will also seek his 11th victory at the half-mile in the Stafford 150.
Ted Christopher, who has 12 career series wins at Stafford, posted the second fastest time of the day with a lap of 18.489 seconds behind the wheel of his No. 82 Horton Avenue Materials Chevrolet. Ryan Preece, who is coming off a victory at Stafford in the Spring Sizzler back in April, posted the third fastest lap of the day with a time of 18.569 seconds. Preece has two victories on the 2017 season in Whelen Modified Tour competition so far.
Jon McKennedy, who is behind the wheel of the No. 00 Brady Bunch Copeland Toyota Chevrolet, was fourth fastest on Friday afternoon, while Max Zachem, who is seeking his first career series win, rounded out the top five fastest times.
Six through 10 were Rowan Pennink, Brendon Bock, Timmy Solomito, Shawn Solomito and Eric Goodale.
The Whelen Modified Tour returns to the track for Stafford 150 Coors Light Pole Qualifying at 6:35 p.m. on Friday evening.
