Whelen Mod Point Leader Coby Fourth

THOMPSON, Conn. — Craig Lutz posted the fastest time in NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour practice on Saturday at Thompson (Conn.) Speedway Motorsports Park. Behind the wheel of the No. 46 Riverhead Building Supply Troyer, Lutz posted a fast time of 18.901 seconds (119.041 mph) around the 0.625-mile oval. Lutz enters Sunday’s Sunoco World Series 150 looking for his first career series while driving for Russell Goodale.
Ryan Preece, who posted the second fastest time, enters the season-finale fourth in the championship standings. Preece posted the a time of 18.939 seconds (118.702 mph). Rowan Pennink was third (18.951 seconds), while points leader Doug Coby was fourth with a speed of 18.955 seconds. Coby is seeking his fourth straight NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour championship and enters Sunday’s race with a 10 point lead over Justin Bonsignore.
Chase Dowling was the fifth fastest car in practice. Gary Putnam, Bonsignore, Rob Summers, Bobby Santos and Eric Goodale rounded out the top 10.
Entering Sunday’s race, Coby, Bonsignore, Preece, Goodale and Pennink, who all posted top 10 times in practice, are among the group elgible to capture the championship. Timmy Solomito, who finished final practice in 10th, is 12 points back in the championship standings.
Solomito’s No. 16 Starrett Tools Ford was involved in an accident in the final practice session and the team is looking over damage ahead of qualifying.
The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour will return to the track for Coors Light Pole Qualifying at 4 p.m. on Saturday. The Sunoco World Series 150 is scheduled to take the green flag at approximately 3:30 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
