NEW SMYRNA, Fla. – Tyler Dippel walked into New Smyrna Speedway on Sunday hoping to get his NASCAR K&N Pro Series East season off to a fast start.
So far, it’s mission accomplished for the Wallkill, New York, driver.
The NASCAR Next alum posted the fastest overall time in practice for the season-opening New Smyrna 175. His quick time of 18.701 seconds (92.401 mph) came in the final practice behind the wheel of the No. 30 TyCar Ford for Rette Jones Racing.
Anthony Alfredo, who will make his first career series start on Sunday evening, was second fastest in the session. Alfredo posted a time of 18.762 (92.101) around the half-mile oval.
Defending series champion Harrison Burton was third overall and fastest in the first session (18.803/91.671), while defending NASCAR K&N Pro Series West champion Todd Gilliland was fourth. Both drivers will run a partial schedule during the 2018 season.
Cole Rouse rounded out the top five overall driving for Bill McAnally Racing.
Six through 10th overall went to Anthony Sergi, Derek Kraus, Chase Cabre, Ruben Garcia Jr. and Spencer Davis.
In the only incident of the two practice sessions, Tyler Ankrum blew a motor on the No. 17. The team is hard at work replacing the motor and hoping to compete in later this evening.
The NASCAR K&N Pro Series East returns to the track for qualifying at 5:30 p.m. local time. The New Smyrna 175, scheduled for 7:30 p.m., will air via a live stream on FansChoice.TV, and on tape-delay on NBCSN on Tuesday, Feb. 27 at 6 p.m. ET
