THOMPSON, Conn. — Doug Coby rolled onto the track as the final car in Wednesday’s NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour group qualifying for the Thompson 125, but he put up the fastest lap of all 29 competitors.

A lap of 18.747 seconds earned him his 22nd career Whelen Modified Tour pole and sixth career at Thompson Speedway Motorsports Park. The five-time and defending series champion will lead the field to the green flag for the Thompson 125 — the fifth race of the 16-race campaign.

Ronnie Williams, who was fastest in practice earlier on Wednesday, posted a time of 18.770 seconds, which will place him on the outside of the front row for the green flag.

Jon McKennedy, who was leading the Icebreaker 150 at Thompson in April before his fuel tank went dry, was third with a time of 18.782 seconds. Points championship leader Justin Bonsignore was fourth, while Rowan Pennink rounded out the top five. Bonsignore enters the race having won two of four events so far this season.

Six through 10 went to Burt Myers, Rob Summers, Timmy Solomito, Dave Sapienza and defending Thompson 125 winner Ryan Preece.

The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour returns to the track for the Thompson 125 at approximately 8 p.m. The race will air via a live stream on FansChoice.TV.
