RIVERHEAD, N.Y. — He may not have a checkered flag at Riverhead Raceway to his credit, but Doug Coby has the speed to get the job done on Saturday night.
The five-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion, and three-time winner this year, posted the fastest speed in practice ahead of the Buzz Chew Chevrolet Cadillac 200.
Coby toured the New York bullring with a fast time of 11.701 seconds (76.917 mph), running his quick lap in the final minutes. In 17 career Riverhead starts, Coby has finished second, twice, and has finished inside the top five in his last four starts.

Justin Bonsignore, who swept both races at Riverhead last year en route to the championship, was second. Bonsignore’s lap of 11.704 seconds (76.897 mph) mirrored Coby’s time. The Holtsville, New York, native has two wins this season, and six in 16 starts at his home track.
Patrick Emerling was third, posting a lap of 11.720 seconds, while Tom Rogers Jr. was fourth. Former NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour champion George Brunnhoelzl III rounded out the top five.
John Beatty Jr. was sixth, followed by Frank Vigliarolo Jr., Eric Goodale, Ron Silk and John Fortin. Rogers, Beatty and Fortin are all regulars as part of Riverhead’s Division I Whelen All-American Series class.
The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour returns to the track for qualifying at 6 p.m. on Saturday. The Buzz Chew Chevrolet Cadillac 200 will take the green flag at 8 p.m., and will air live on FansChoice.TV.
