RIVERHEAD, N.Y. — It has been a perfect start to the day for Doug Coby.
The Milford, Connecticut, driver, and five-time NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour champion, posted the fastest time in practice at Riverhead Raceway, and took the Mayhew Tools Dominator pole award in qualifying for the Buzz Chew Chevrolet Cadillac 200.
Coby’s quick qualifying time driving the No. 2 Mayhew Tools Chevrolet was a lap of 11.708 seconds (76.871 mph) around the New York bullring. It was Coby’s fifth pole in the first eight attempts this season, and his 27th career in Whelen Modified Tour action. In 17 previous starts at Riverhead, Coby has yet to visit Victory Lane.

“We had a great car in practice, but really fine-tuned on it, little things at this track really matter,” Coby said. “I think we got the car really good by the end of practice. The team made some great changes for qualifying.”

Justin Bonsignore, who swept both Whelen Modified Tour races at his home track last year, was second in qualifying, just like he was in practice. Bonsignore toured the oval with a lap of 11.791 seconds (76.329 mph), which will place him on the outside of the front row for the green flag.
Chris Young was third, followed by Patrick Emerling and former Riverhead winner Timmy Solomito.
Tom Rogers Jr. was sixth, while Sam Rameau, Tommy Catalano, Mike Rutkoski and Chris Pasteryak completed the top 10. Five of the first 10 drivers in qualifying have previous experience running the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Division I Modified class at Riverhead.
The NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour returns to the track for the Buzz Chew Chevrolet Cadillac 200 at 8 p.m. on Saturday evening. The race will air live on FansChoice.TV.
